Photographing Family Fun and S’more(s) in Windham

Jeff reached out to book a photography session for his extended family. They would be gathering in an AirBnB in Windham and wanted some candid coverage and planned portraits with parents, siblings and children.

These sorts of sessions are generally driven by one person and the conversation leading to the booking sounds something like “Great, let me make sure everyone is on board.”  In other words, one participant has the idea and everyone needs to agree.

These family gatherings are mini vacations for all parties. Whether built around a birthday, a holiday weekend or a ski getaway, a portrait session means carving a little time out of the schedule to devote to photos.

The good news is an hour (or two for the ambitious) is often more than enough.

In this case, it was a two hour session. That allowed ample time for wardrobe changes and scenery changes. The family gathered in the large yard for a group shot, around the fire pit for s’mores, limited gymnastics in the living room, the kids playing in the indoor pool…good memories of their time together.

I love seeing how much organization goes into these sessions; not just the planning on my end checking and rechecking my cameras and gear but by the family; coordinating what everyone will wear, making sure there are marshmallows, graham crackers and Hershey Bars available…and the positive energy that all bring.

It seems like there are always new things to try. New opportunities for new poses – in this case, the “Titanic shot” aboard the wooden ship in the onsite playground, as suggested by the family.  (Incredibly, though I know the shot I  have never seen the film!)

If at the end of the session it seems everyone had fun, and it generally does, we know it was a success. All that’s left to do is the post production – a little light editing, upload and delivery.

Memories made. Memories preserved!
